My cockatiel laid an egg. How can I tell if it is fertile and how long until it hatches? She has a mate I believe (we are not 100% sure that it is a male but he sings a lot and has the characteristics of a male) we are just wondering in case the egg is fertile.

Hold it up to the light...or candle. If it's "clear" it is not fertile. Dark spots/veins...fertile.
Be sure your bird has a proper diet.

Is your bird by itself? Female birds will lay eggs even if there is no mate. Obviously, this egg won't be fertile. If your bird does have a mate and there is a chance the egg is fertile, find a vet that specializes in birds and ask them how to care for the egg and the adult birds.

You should be able to hold the egg up to a light and tell. Now as far as how long it takes to hatch you could probably pull it up on the internet. Of course somebody else here on zootoo should be able to tell you. Good luck Nichole!
