My cat has a fascination with bags...

I have had Abbie 7 or so years and since the day she came into our lives she has had a thing for plastic bags. She "pets" them, over and over as if she just likes the sound it makes. This is especially fun in the middle of the night. I know there are other cats who do this right? She also must sit/lay on anything paper. Newspaper, catalog, magazine, pizza box, whatever, if it is horizontal, she will lay on it. Heaven for Abbie will be a plastic bag to bat while she can lay on a pizza box (in hammock form if possible) in a sun ray.
Does anyone know why this is all so much fun for her? Is it the equivilant of me enjoying the sound of the pop of bubble wrap?

thats pretty interesting, my cats have never done that. They like to play with bags, but not all the time. And as for the lying down on paper thing, i have no idea why that would be so important to her unless she likes the feel of paper. I guess you have already tried to keep plastic and paper products away from her, other than that i wouldnt know what else to do.

probably because of the sound and the excitment it brings her. My cat did the same thing.

I had a cat that was obsessed with both plastic and paper bags...I asked the vet, who basically said it IS similar to the fun we have with bubble wrap. It's just something they enjoy!

I have a cat that will lick a plastic bag forever. I do know this is fairly common. Some cats like the sound of crinkling plastic or softer paper (not as soft as tissue)-and sometimes use both as toys or just to "knead" their paws on. I don't know the reason, either-though I've asked. So far the only thing I've been able to find out is that it's a common proccupation and supposedly not harmful.

i've read that some plastic bags are made from corn by-products and the cats like the taste.

My cat loves to sit on paper and stuff too, but she chews on it, which it's kind of funny b/c I just posted a question about that when I saw this one :) Sasha also loves the sound plastic bags make, maybe it's just some sort of weird cat trait lol. Also, my cat also seems to love anything square, she will sit in ways that look so uncomfortable just to squeeze herself into a shoe box or on top of a game. My old cat was the same way, I don't know what attracts them to square objects...but that's probably part of why she loves to sit on paper, etc.

my cats will sit on paper, if there's a sheet of paper on the ground, and boca likes to play IN bags. we are very careful with her!
