Male or Female Border Collie?

Can anyone tell me the difference in a male or female border collie as far as temperment or training abilities. I have not had much luck with female dogs in the past, as they prefer my husband as alfa. Has anyone noticed a difference? I own a male border collie and he loves and protects only me. What about a female?
