does anyone know of any kind of medical book for dog owners that will describe diseases and their symptoms so that the ordinary pet owner can understand them?

I also have the Dog Owner's Veterinary Manual - it's consumer friendly, basically written in lay terms.

Yes! Check Merck's online Veterinary Manual --- you don't even have to pay for it. I have used the Merck Manual for human medicine for decades, and trust this source.

The Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook is a great resource. You can check out a review of it right here on Zootoo and order it on Amazon.

There are a lot of books, and I probably have most of them, I still depend on my Vet I trust him and he knows I'll bring them in for a sniffle, he looks at whatever one it is, if ht sounds serious he checks everything, tell's me what he thinks ,I do what he tell's me, other times he just looks at me, gives a chuckle and tells me I make his day and to go home and take them for a walk(no charge) I go home look in the book and them search the computer and end up agreeing with him, save your money and if it's bad enough to look up go to the Vet.

You can go to Books a Million or your local bookstore and they can help you with several.
