Is there anyway to eliminate carpet chewing?

I love my 15 month pit bull Cirrus very much. Most days he is very well behaved left alone and uncrated. Occasinally he will find a thread or something in the carpet that must catch his eye and will dig, rip, and chew through the carpet (twice through the padding and all the way down to the hardwood). I've tried toys and shorter periods of time alone. Now that's he's housebroken, I hate to crate him all day. Has anyone found a way to stop or discourage this behavior? PLEASE HELP!

15 months seems too young to be free while you're away. I always crated my dogs until they were old enough to prove they could be trusted with total freedom. I feel it's safer for them and they really don't mind it since they instinctively like confined spaces but if you really don't want to crate him is there a small room you can confine him to, like a laundry room? Some place he can't get into trouble. Apple bitters doesn't work so don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise.

oh i also forgot, there's a spray that can be put on bandanna's and loosly tied around dog's necks, sprayed in cars, bedding, the carpet that will help them calm them down. ask your vet about it.

since he's still under a year old, i would keep crating him while you're away. also, he might have seperation anxeity (sorry about spelling) which might be the cause of it. we had this with my one year old beagle/springer mix and we still have to keep her kenneled up so stuff doesn't get chewed. she was chewing wires, shoes, even my mom's bedding!!! hope i could help.

Dogs have a natural instinct to chew. They will chew on inappropriate items when there are no appropriate items around. So, you may want to invest in some new chew toys, you can put a little peanut butter on them so its more enticing. You could also consider longer lasting natural treats too. A dog that is chewing destructively may also be bored. That means you need to take him for long walks and have some interactive play with him.
