"pitbull" is used to define several breeds of dogs such as American Pitbull terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier.

The pitbull is a breed. This guy might have been confused because their origanal name is the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Since they are registerable under pit bull by the national breeder like abda and ukc I would assume that it is an actual breed.

The term Pitbull was once used to describe any dog that fought in a pit as a sport.( Some sport!)Now there are breed standards for an American Pitbull which is a more recently recognized breed in the AKC. At one time the AMStaff,Bull terrier were also considered by some to be a pit. Personally I love all the Bully breeds as you can see by my name.
