As many have said before, a vet check is the best thing to do for your dog. A Dollar to a Donut though, it's the anal glands! YOu can try to express them yourself, if you are comfortable with your animal. Have someone hold Zeus's head and you go for the tail end! Hold up tail with one hand, and with the other hand, place your thumb and middle finger (vinyl gloves and paper towel necessary) at 8:00 and 4:00 at the rectum push in slightly and then gently squeeze as you slide your hand back towards you. You will start to smell a horrible smell and some awful yucky gunk will start to fill the paper towel. You may begin to gag, but hang tuff! It will soon be over and the knowledge that you will have gained will do one of two things: make you feel grand OR respect what it costs to be a vet! It's not my favorite thing to do, but I learned this wonderful skill when I was a vet tech! Zeus will look at you in a totally different way after you get up close and personal. He may never turn his butt to you again or he may run to you every time he starts a build up!

You dog needs to go to the vet. The are a few things that are most likely culprits, which have been mentioned before. I'll try to give you an idea of what might be in store for your pet.

If it's an anal gland problem then the gland needs to be 'expressed'. If you wait too long to get an 'Express Anal Gland' procedure done than it can become infected and the dog will also require antibiotics.

If it's worms then the Dr. will give you medicine for that but they'll need to determine which type of intestinal worms it is so you'll need to drop a fresh stool sample off at the vets. Call first for instructions.

If it's allergies then you'll likely be given a special shampoo, perhaps you'll be told to buy an over the counter-the-counter medicine and you'll be given dosage instructions, and maybe a change in food will be required.

You've been given some good advice in previous answers. These are not usually expensive problems. If money issues are a problem then try Banfield vet in Petsmart. Banfield runs clinic hours where they waive the doctors exam fee. Check out their website to get the phone number of one close to you then call them to see when their free clinic hours are being held. They run that clinic every week in my area and some stores do it twice a week.

If you tell your Dr. that money is a factor in your pets health care then they will work with you to reduce your vet costs. All the vets I know do that for those who tell them. Ask if their is a human version of the prescription and if it is just as effective. If your vet gives you a written Rx to fill then call around and price check the low cost pharmacies in your area. Costco is the lowest priced one in my area. You don't have to be a member of the club to use the pharmacy. It is against federal law to have a private pharmacy. Just tell the people at the door you're only going to the pharmacy.

Good luck and don't wait or hesitate. I hope your dog feels better soon.

I wouldn't come out and say for certain "it is an anal gland problem", because unless you're a licensed vet or groomer and evaluate the dog in person, there is no way to tell over the internet ;)

it is a anal glad problem but if your vet is costly you can either learn to do it yourself but alot of groomers will take care of it when they groom your animal.

It could be an anal gland problem. I'd definitely recommend a visit to your vets for a definitive answer to your question. When in doubt, call the vet !!
