How to potty train a cat

I was wondering if anyone knew how to potty train a cat. My dad has a cat that is constantly going to the bathroom by his desk rather than using its litter box. He is really frustrated and is thinking of getting rid of the cat. I asked him to wait so that I could see if I could get him some useful information to try and remedy the problem. If anyone has any tips or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them. Thanks.

Definitely consider trying different litters. Some cats may be adverse to the per fumy smell of a litter or to the texture. The box could also be a problem. I have one cat that will use a covered box with no problem and my other cat will only use the open box. Some cats may also prefer a lower front opening. Placement of the box also deserves consideration. If the box is currently in a hight traffic area or by something loud like a washing machine or oil burner the cat may not want to go there. Some cats like to feel secure in where they go. Also make sure the box is kept very clean and perhaps have a second box somewhere as an alternate choice in case the cat is picky about not going in a dirty box.

It's possible your kitty just doesn't like the litter, the box or the location of either. Try out different kinds of kitty litter. My old kitty who hated litterboxes of any kind (would go right next to it, but not in it) finally started using the box when we bought Feline Pine. Another great brand was something like World's Best or World's Greatest but I only got it through mail order and have long since forgotten the exact name. It lasted forever (okay, a month and a half) and I never had a cat turn it down.

I just posted this in reply to a cat vs rug question.
I can house break a cat in one day - it has Never failed! Put vinegar in a bucket, no water, dip your mop in it & go over all your floors up to the litter box. You don't have to soak the floors, just gently go over them. I have Never had a cat go anywhere after doing this & it works in 1 Day!

i would say to put the litter box where it is going, and use like feline pine of corn cob litter, because some cat litters can cause cats to get cancer, plus the corn cob litter is alot cheaper than normal, it may not absorb anything or block out smells, and you have to change it more, but in the long run it is safer and healthier for your cat.

Hi -- many times it's the litter you're using. What type are you using right now? Also, do you clean it out every day? It's a must!
I'd recommend trying Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat litter that is designed to help attract cats to the pan....and not do their business anywhere but in the pan! You can go to www.preciouscat.com to learn more, and you can find it at Petsmart.
Try that out.
Another thing would be find out if your cat is mad at your Dad. :) I had a cat that hated my husband and peed in his shoes. Oh my! It was totally territorial.
Good luck.

I had that problem with my kitten when i first got her. where ever she if going to the bathroom, i had to move my litter box there. Or something else you can do is at petco they have a stain remover and it completely removes the cats scent. They have it for ferrets and i just applied it to my carpet, and it worked just fine.

Well, I have trained a few cats to be potty trained. Normally it is pretty easy. All I did was put its #2 in a cat box & then put the cat/Kitten in it too. The cat sniffs the #2 & then will return to the box after the 1st or 2nd time of doing this. We have had a cat that we had to move the litter box to the area it was going to the bathroom at & then slowly move it every day to its desired location. That worked pretty well too. Also, lots of cats like their box to be pretty clean & some wont use it if you havent cleaned it in a while.
Another thing is that the cat could be trying to mark its territory. Wether it is doing that or just simply chose that spot to be its bathroom, i still think a "No-go" spray would help the cat know not to go there.
