Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get dogs to use one? We installed one a few months back and only our youngest dog and cat will use the door. Our other three dogs will come to it and look in/out but wont try to go through. We have tried food/treats. I tried to nudge them through it a few times and thought they would get the idea but nope. They will come to the door wanting in/out. Anyone have any idea what to try next?

I held ours open then the nudge worked. I started all the way open then slowly let the door close behind them. I had luck so far training 4 dogs to use the door. Two of my dogs, my daughters dog, then helped a friend get his dog use ti theres. It will be to there advantage & yours if they use the doggie door. Good luck Like some said try a realy special treat.

I have used a "doggie door" for years. It is quite easy to train a dog to use it. I suggest you train right before dinner time--so the dog is hungry. Start when the dog is outside and lift the flap towards you inside and offer a tasty treat--meat or cheese to entice them through the door. Repeat this several times with lots of "happy celebrations" & treats.
After they have had dinner--reverse the process for them to go out. Happy training!

We initially had this problem with our four dogs. We had to work with them for awhile to get them used to it. First we held it open for them coaxing them through the other side. We opened and closed it so they would know what it sounded like as well. We would go through the patio door let them out and then go back inside, get their goodies out and call for them to come through the door. When they came through they got a treat after several times they didn't think about it anymore and have used it ever since.

I had one installed in May, right before I went on vacation, hoping to make it easy on my pet sitters. My cat, Mitten, loves it -- Tipper & Pepper, my dogs, are afraid of it. They will go out only if you hold it open for them. Truthfully, I haven't worked real hard on it, but next spring we're going to focus on getting them to use it. Like anything, I think it just takes persistence!

Try to put food the other side of the door and call them ! In spite of any fears they will be probably enxious to eat 1

I have a chihuahua that will not use ours either. Our other 5 dogs use it fine. I've tried holding the flap open for her and she will come in that way but very reluctantly. Might hold the flap and then give treats when they come in but some dogs just never will use it.
