How often do you walk your dog and how far or for how long?

I feel guilty about walking my dogs. I try to get them out once a day for a mile walk each but they probably get out only 5 times a week. I really feel like they should get out twice a day, but that's rare.

I agree with those saying that it depends on the dog. I have a 4-yr-old yellow lab/greyhound. I try to take him for a 1 to 2 mile walk daily, but if he doesn't get that, he's happy with a shorter jaunt. I make sure he gets out for some level of exercise every day. When it's really cold, he's really not all that eager to stay out too long (I live in NW Wisconsin and it's been -15 degrees that last few mornings). If your dog is not getting enough exercise, you'll know by the way it acts.

Well usually i dont have a whole lot of walking time but me and my jack russel Rosie only walk for about 20 minutes. But if I havent gotten to walk her all week then i play aroung 10 minutes of ball with her! Every time we go to the vet the vet always says that she is in good weight and everything....

It really does depend on the dog. Jack russels can go for hours so they need alot of walking time, or in my case I have a bull dog that can only go 5 houses down and acts like shes going to die, and we have been doing this with her for 4 years. I agree with MR. Eric, a bike would be a good Idea same amount of time less hard work for you more work for the animal.

It depends on your dogs on weather or not they're getting enough exercise. If they don't seem to have any behavior issues or anything of that sort then they should be fine with how much they get walked. As a family we don't take our dogs out for real walks that often but they play with each other and with us all day in the house so they still get their needed exercise.

I wish I could always walk my dogs everyday. The weather here in Iowa is really cold in the winter. Today it's maybe around 5 degrees. Then you add the windchill and it's just too cold for me to walk them. I try my best to get them out everyday at least once.

The fact that you're getting out there for those mile walks is great! If you take your dogs for walks in the morning, try a shorter walk in the evening around the block or just up the road a bit and back. My dog usually gets one walk a day about a mile or so. On the weekends he'll get a walk in the morning and in the evening to the same spot. On the weekends try taking them somewhere different. I live in the mountains so I'm able to take my dog on a day hike to different spots. I'm sure your dogs really appreciate the walks they get. Don't worry, you're still a good dad.

Don't feel bad. Every dog is different. As a child our dog got walked for maybe 20-30 minutes a few times a week. He also got to play with us in the house and he was fine. Never any issues. Now my dog now she goes out for 3 walks a day in the summer but she is high energy plus. In the winter it is very cold here in New England so we don't walk as much. We try to do 1-2 walks a day for about 20-30 minutes each time. But a lot of the times is one and sometimes none. We have a treadmill so we will use that as well. Also, it can help to do retrieving games, play tug and do obidence training. Sometimes if I know exercise will be minimul I will feed her with a feeding cube to make her work more. Every dog is different so as long as your dogs are happy and not going crazy with extra energy they are fine.

it depends on what kind of dogs you have. Some dogs need to be exhausted fairly often to stay happy. Perhaps you could get a bike and run them instead of walking.. same amount of time, more effort for dog

I think it all depends on your dogs. It's been so cold/icy/snowy here, it's been dangerous to do much walking. We try to do other things with them to help take "the edge" off, like supply them with toys that we play with them with and more chewy things - right now they are chewing on rawhides.
We see so many people that don't walk their dogs at ALL in our neighborhood, just a quick in/out for the bathroom. I feel really sorry for THOSE dogs! And oftentimes they have owners that would really benefit from a walk themselves.
