It may be a horrible idea for some dog owners. But some training may require this, am I right? And in emergency situations if someone will need to take your dog out of the car, with a muzzle it is so much easier, isn't? Then, why are so many people upset about muzzles? If an owner has a muzzle on his dog - it is a good owner who knows his dog limitations. Some people say they do not like using halters on their dogs because they "look like a muzzle". Wow! Poor muzzles!... What do you think?

You should really only need to use a muzzle when you suspect or are positive that the dog has aggression issues, or that something might cause your dog to react in an aggressive way (small children, small animals, a vaccination from the vet, etc).

I have never had to muzzle my dogs, however sometimes I have suggested it to my clients when we are working with defensive issues.

I have used the soft nylon muzzle before and found it worked just fine. Dog could breathe fine and even take soft treats.
Using a muzzle is what responsible people do if there is any chance the dog might try to bite someone or something.
It is for everyone's protection!

We tried and found out that it makes our dog feel like he is a big bad bully and that we have to protect others from him. It feeds into their ego.

I have used a muzzle on my dog when working with aggression issues. I prefered the basket muzzle because he could still breathe and even take treats through the basket. I was being a responsible dog owner while working on issues. I also used a muzzle when taking him to the vet. We finally reached a breakthrough and no longer needed the muzzle.

I own 5 dogs and I have used a muzzle on one of them.
I attended a training course where it was required.

There are different types of muzzles for different types of situations. Nylon muzzles are appropriate and useful in certain situations for grooming. Aggressive dogs should not be in public without a cage or similar muzzle. I do not consider muzzles inhumane unless used in an inhumane way for an inappropriate purpose or without taking the required safety precautions. In the event of an emergency I have made a makeshift muzzle out of a strip of cloth I had handy to rescue a dog hit by a car. I muzzled the dog prior to doing anything else, and kept him muzzled during transportation to the veterinarian's offie. It didn't hurt the dog at all, and protected the humans trying to help him from accidental bites due to pain or fear.

We had to use one when we were in Feisty Fido classes. Not as bad as it sounds. Helped Jett get thru multiple classes and "issues". He is a great dog NOW but he could be an exception.

My neighbors use a muzzle on their dog when they walk it. He is very well behaved when they go out, so I think the muzzle worked for them. I don't have much experience with them, but it seems nicer than just a plain collar where you practically have to choke the dog if it starts running after another person or pet.
