In a 10 gallon tank, I think you could have up to 5 small crabs comfortably, but then when they grow, what will you do? You've also got to be sure they've got room after a food and water supply, extra shells and rocks to climb on, etc... if they're small enough to have multiple "friends" even then, I say go for it. I don't think they grow so quickly that you'll have to worry about a larger confinement for quite a little while.

You can add a couple of more crabs comfortably (as long as they are small) but you will have to consider buying a larger aquarium as your hermit crabs grow.
