I thought my 4 was a lot! Are you keeping up w/ vaccinations, high-quality food, etc? Do you have enough time for TLC for all? Is there enough room for everyone, enough toys, etc?

If you have plenty of litterboxes, room and a happy colony, then 23 works - for you. Congratulations.

I agree, as long as you can afford vet bills and quality food for them, great. We have 6 cats and one will occasionally start peeing outside the litter box if she gets stressed (with foster kittens, etc.) That means 6 is enough for us, although we'd love to have more.

Cats will usually let you know if you have too many. When there are too many cats, some will become stressed and exhibit behavior changes. The most common behavior change is to start urinating outside the litter pan. Also, some cats may become more agressive toward others. If you are not seeing any behavior problems then, as others have stated, having the money and time to properly care for them is crucial.

My family would say I have too many! I live with 4 dogs and 5 cats. I am also fostering 7 other cats who I will probably adopt because the strays keep coming into the shelter and we have only so many places to keep them.

So my answer to you is that if you are able to care for these cats, maintain them medically, have them all altered, keep the litter boxes clean - it is your decision.

And educate people on the merits of altering their cats and use your home as an example of what happens if other pet parents are not responsible.

The other alternative would probably be euthanasia ... for either one of your babies or for another cat to make room for your babies at a shelter.

23 would not be too much if you have plenty of space for them to roam and for each to get away from the others for thier own "private time". If you have the finances. If you have a good amount of time to spend with them each day so you can bond with them and take note of any changes with any of them. If you keep the place extremely clean. I think it also makes a difference if you rescued them from something bad or if you purposely went out to adopt them. If you purposely went out of your way to adopt then I'd have to agree that 23 is way to many but sometimes, under certain circumstances you just can't help it.
