How Long Do Mastiffs (Or Other Giant Breed) Dogs Live?

I have an 8 year old Mastiff. He is definitely slowing down (though I am not sure he ever moved very quickly to begin with!?!)

I know that the charts say that most Mastiffs don't live beyond 10 years because they are so large. I guess this affects their hearts and joints.

Does anyone out there have any "success" stories about a giant breed living beyond this and, if so, what do you think accounted for it.

I hate the thought of losing my boy in another year or so.

I'm really sorry - this is a tough point with me too because I have owned newfoundlands - both of them died at 10 years old. we have another one now so hopefully she will beat them out but i'm prepared for it to happen at 10 again. I love big dogs but this is the downside.

I am so sorry. THIS is why I usually stick with the smaller breeds as they can live beyond 18 yrs. According to my daughter (surgical vet tech) and a friend who has owned 3 Mastiffs, of the 3, only one lived to be 11 yo. My daughter says, generally, it is 8-10 yrs. Mastiffs are an awesome breed. Try to remember ALL the little moments of joy that makes owning this breed worth it. Treasure the rest. Happy Holidays. Julee
