I am always surprised to hear that people tell me the dog is housetrained, but has a few accidents here and there. In my book, that is not housetrained. How long has it taken you to housetrain a dog? What is the longest time and why do you think it took so long? What is the shortest? What did you do?

I am not sure how I did it? I took Nico out every hour for the first few days and we would go to 1 spot and I would say "go potty nico" after a few days - i lengthened it to 90 minutes and then 2 hours - I stayed there for a long time and then went to 3 hours and lengthened it from there. he only had an accident 2 times in our house. I knew he was housetrained when he started coming up to me whining, then sitting right by my feet and then going to the door and sitting right by the door. That is the signal my parents use when I am at work now -to let him go outside and go potty. He has never had an accident - except for throwing up when he was sick and there were a few nights where he had D from his pancreatitis attacks? But even then - we were racing to the door and didn't make it out before he got sick?

Depends on the breed. We have a Chihuahua and we heard they were difficult to potty train. She took about six months and at two years her length of stay time is still expanding. We do use a crate because of an 18 lb kitty and 7 lb kitty in our household. I had co-worker with a bad experience with one of her cats attaching the smaller dog. So. to be safe, we crate her.

Katie Anne got the hang of housetraining within two days. She have never had an accident despite being left for 12 hours sometimes. I have noticed that larger dogs have an easier time with staying accident free. My mother has a small mixed breed and he still has accidents if left for 6 hours or so. She is just patient and knows that accidents happen.

It only took me about a week to house train my dog. He was so easy to train - BUT I paid a lot of attention to him and learned his signs. When he started to sniff around - out he went. When he even looked at me funny - out he went.
Just be patient and love, love, love your dog. He only want to please you.

DEPENDS ON YOUR PATIENCE AND TIME YOU SPEND WITH THE DOG, SOME DOGS LEARN FAST WITH PROPER TRAINING AND OTHERS ARE SLOWER, ITS LIKE POTTY TRAINING KIDS, THERE IS NO PERFECT TIME.

The various answers:
Mostly, that's like an achoholic being mostly sober
Yes, I trained him to use newspaper, I love this one like
the dog knows which one I've read
Absolutely, then why is he peeeing on my leg
Yes, ah then it must be your children who left that pile
of poo at the back door

I have used a crate for most but most of my dogs were young adults. The only puppy I ever had was so enamored of the adult female he just did everything she did. He had 1 and only one accident in the house and I got him at 4 months of age. I couldn't tell you how long, my memory just isn't that good but sweetie was probably the longest. We got her when she was 8-10 years of age and had never been in a house but we had to make liberal use of the crate and leash during her heartworm treatment and it just worked out.
