I am always surprised to hear that people tell me the dog is housetrained, but has a few accidents here and there. In my book, that is not housetrained. How long has it taken you to housetrain a dog? What is the longest time and why do you think it took so long? What is the shortest? What did you do?

It depends on the individual. We've had some dogs that caught on in a week, others that took YEARS, and we had one that never did catch on.

I think that 1-2 weeks is about average that we have had our experience with. I think the biggest thing is consistancy. Yes, accidents happen with puppies, but try to get them out before the accidents and reward when they do go outside.

2 wks! If you are consistant you can housebreak even an 8wk old puppy to go outside in this amount of time.

We started out paper training our puppies and then just did like we did with kids, after every nap, and if they started to wander around sniffing the ground, out the door they go.
It didn't seem like it took a long time to train, don't remember any serious problems with housebreaking our puppy.(now dog)

It depends on how well you train your dog it be from two weeks to two years

It took my oldest Westie 2 years to completely stop having accidents in the house, but he was very stubborn. On the other hand, my younger Westie was house broken within 2 months. Each dog has to grow, learn and decide for itself when it is time to stop going in the house. Patience and rewards are key.

I think with a very young puppy it probably takes longer. The youngest puppy I have adopted has been 12 weeks old and I was able to housebreak him in one week. You have to be committed to the process and the schedule of feedings to housebreak effectively. You do not allow them any unsupervised moments. I kept him with me at all times or he was in his crate. He never had an accident in the house or his crate. I always took him out on his leash to the same area of the yard--so he knew this was the "designated area". Rain or shine we stayed focused with lots of positive energy.

It really depends on how old the puppy is too. Just like any baby animal, human or whatever they have to be able to hold "it" before they can be trained not to go. Routine and prper discipline is important too and DON'T LISTEN to people who say you have to rub their noses in their messes. My puppy was totally trained in about 7 weeks, she was 8 weeks old when we got her. She is now almost 2 and has not had an accident even on occaision when left home for 14 plus hours.

I believe it all depends upon the routine you establish for your dog, how well you can stick to that routine, and how reinforcing you make going potty outside. Also how well you notice your dogs signals that he is about to go potty so you can help him make the correct decision.

I believe that sometimes it does depends on the breed and how fast that individual pet picks things up, however, the influence if the owner is the most important factor in training. The more you around and take te pet out the fast it will learn. Also, you can't be afraid to reprimand the pet and make sure they know they did something wrong if they have an accident inside as well as reward them when they go outside :) My puppy was trained within a month I would say.
