My sister has an older cat and I have a kitten. When they met for the first time the older cat hissed and growled at the kitten. I don't know what to do so if you have any advice please reply, thank you.

Cats are normally very territorial. Every time I have brought an animal into my house, my cats always growl and hiss, and if the animal comes too close they will swipe at it. I just let them do as they please, and now all three of my cats like each other. Well, to an extent haha.

But the best thing to do is to keep the cats in separate rooms, and slowly let them get used to each other. Bring them something with the other's cat scent on it, only bring them together when they are supervised so they don't end up hurting one another. Just let both of them have their space, and they will accept each other in the own time.

Here’s what I did when I got Pepper. I already had Sage. In my living room I have windows that go to the floor which is adjacent to my enclosed porch.

First I would hold Pepper and get her scent all over me, and then I would hold Sage and get Peppers scent on him. Sage would sit in the living room at the window and Pepper would sit on the porch at the window. I did that for a few days, and then I opened the window and watched very closely. Eventually Sage accepted Pepper and all was well.

Until Wild came along. By that time Sage was use to having strange animals come in the house. He let Wild in, but Pepper did not. I just gave it time and finally let Wild in. Pepper still hates her, but they tolerate each other.

Oh, and I also kept Ruckus in one of those huge, small animals cages at night. I put his own litter box, food, water, and toys in there so each cat had its own territory. Im sure rampage would have flipped out if he was eating her food or using her litterbox.

I have a 2 year old cat that i just introduced to a new kitten that was dumped in our dumpster at work. At first, I introduced them through the glass at work and Rampage, the older cat, about came through the glass trying to attack Ruckus, the little guy.

I brought Ruckus home every night after work and eventually, they started allowing each other to get closer and closer and now he chases her around and tackles her. She still growls on occasion and gives him a swat or 2 on the head, but they are doing really good together.

It just takes a lot of patience...cats are generally bitchy(in my experiences) towards other cats and will stand their ground for quite awhile.

A lot depends on the personalities of both cats, but a very young kitten will usually look at the adult cat as a mother (even it if's a male). I introduced a 6 week old to a 6 year old and it took a few weeks, but then they were pals for life. I knew the day I saw the older one bathing the younger one, they were set. They loved each other endlessly. There was hissing from the adult at first, but the kitten took it in stride. Most of the time, they work it out and become best friends.
