Hi,
Good question! Not every dog or every person is right for this work no matter how well-intentioned they might be. Dog and handler don't always find the person alive, or will find them injured and must know first aid, etc. I would highly recommend that you begin to learn more about it by reading "Read: The Training of A Search and Rescue Dog," and it's sequel, "Ready To Serve, Ready to Save." Both were written by the highly respected Susan Bulanda.

I used to live on La Honda Dr there is Anchorage and my neighbor had a golden named Jack that was being trained for avalanche rescue so I know there are courses available. You might contact Rick Sinnot's office for referral information or you might try David Kasser at ACVB as he really loves dogs as well.

Gee that's a great question. I'd start with calling all of the shelters around you. Call your vet. One lead will lead to another. You do live in a very beautiful part of the country. Good Luck!
