How can we get our cat to stop crying at night?

We got our 2nd cat about 8 wks ago. SHe is a good cat, but at night she just whines and cries, off and on all night long. SHe will not sleep on our bed, and usually as soon as it is dark, she runs downstairs and will play with her little sock toy and cry most of the night. I don't get it. I don't know why she is doing it but also do not know how to get her to stop. SO far, we have just ignored the behavior, thinking it will stop when she gets used to the day/night schedule we follow. Last night it was really bad. I am afraid if we give her any attention it will encourage her to continue, but then ignoring it is not working. I do not know her history, only that she was picked up as a stray with 5 kittens. Seems like she should be getting adjusted by now! Our other cat is even getting tired of it! We all need some sleep! HELP!!

I would give her lots of extra exercise during the day and crate her at night. You will probably still have some complaining for a few nights, but she will soon get used to the routine.

If shes not spayed, she's probably in heat. If she is, it won't stop until she either breeds or gets spayed. If she gets out, she will most likely have more kittens.

If you give your cat any attention, even by scolding or yelling at her, you may reinforce the crying. I have a friend who slept with ear plugs when she first got her cat. I don't think the problem lies in her past, but in her age. From your question, she sounds like a kitten, and its possible that she just has more energy than you or your other cat. If you play with her before bedtime, and make sure she has toys with her at night, it may help too.

I'm curious to know how you get this resolved. When I took my indoor cat out on the porch for a few days, she started whining at night to go outside. I quit taking her out, and like you said, she just stopped. I can't imagine having too live with that for so long. Have you tried crating her with her toy?
