Our one dog Freya was fine in the car ride until you went over 45 miles per hour. Then she was in the floor of the back seat.
So do you go long distance and fast or just around the block. Does he act the same way.
It could be he is just too excited. I agree with Marta. Try being calm before going.

hey...there are doggie seatbelts that you can get. and they are actually a realyl good thing to have , incase of an accident your dogs will be much safer...just like humans should wear seatbelts. you could try that out a few times and see how they feel about it, and if they could get used to it and till enjoy the car rides :)

Try not to use an excited tone when getting ready for a ride. Most people say things like" Who want's to go for a ride?", " Or " Who wants to go for a walk?" That just makes them get all riled up. Don't say a word, just put them in the car and go. Like the other said use a device to restrain them and be calm. It might also help if you could get someone to ride with you, that can teach them to be calm so they (and you) can enjoy the ride.

Sounds like he's over excited. You could try taking him on a long walk before leaving or exhaust him out with some interactive play. Also, take him by himself on a few short rides, but don't act anxious yourself, try to ignore him and act like its a bother to leave. If you are anxious about him being anxious, he will pick up on it and get excited. Also, if he acts excited then take his mind off of it by commanding him to do a trick, like sit or stay. Each time he acts nervous, become in charge and make him do your command. Eventually, he will become less focused on the excitement.
If all else fails, when he's older (15, 17 years or so, haha), he will probably be calm and ride around fine.

Try giving her something called Pet Calm. It is made by Richard's Organics. I found it at Petco. The other thing that we discovered is that our dog likes to be able to see out of the window, but wants to be secure as well. We bought her a Dog seatbelt. That has also gone a long way in helping her stay calm in the car.
