our newest puppy, Randy, has a new trick....digging holes in the backyard. "Dad" is not too happy and now Arielle, our oldest, figures...well if Randy's doing it, why don't I (something she didn't typically do before). How can we nip this habit in the bud?

Your dog may be digging out of boredom or frustration. Find an exercise that he likes and do alot of it. Like my dog loves the frisbee and he has made a racetrack of sorts out in the backyard. We play touch his tail. Whoever gets the most points wins. Plus walks are great!

Dogs dig for a reason. Mostly to burn excess energy, something puppies have a lot of. Next is frustration and boredom. Play with him a lot and keep him tired. Not easy. You didn't mention the breed, but some have more energy than others. Also dogs need to get out and see and smell the world. If they don't, frustration can lead to destruction of things. Puppy classes are a great way for you to learn how to understand dogs and it's so much fun for both of you.

My dog likes to dog too.... Some breeds like it more then others. I have a big backyard so I have taught him it's allright to dog in those places and no other places. How did I do that? Everytime he went to dog near the house or patio - I would redirect him - and walk him over to the place where he can dig - and say "Dig" really happy - I also put water resilient toys there and let him find them. Good Luck. I think Valerie Stillwell told a family to get a sandbox and fill it for their dog so the digging instinct would not hurt the garden? I didn't get a sandbox - but trees surround his digging spot... I call it his little piece of heaven in our backyard. Good Luck

Someone earlier mentioned giving them one small place where it's okay to dig--you can help them stay in that area by tossing treats in, or partially burying toys in that spot to "reward" them for only digging in the right place. If you don't want ANY digging, then you do just have to leash them up and do the training. My dog has SO much fun digging, that I let her do it in appropriate places.

Many puppies love to dig. It may be that it's a physiological part of maturing. All my puppies stopped digging at a certain point in maturity. They dig now only when They hear or smell the little critters under ground.

Tell the little rascal, "NO!" and mean business. Then put their leashes on and take them for a long walk. Walk them every morning before their breakfast and continue to tell them "NO!" each time you catch them digging.

As soon as they catch on that you're their pack leader and are taking care of their instinctual needs, they'll understand when you are not pleased with their behavior and will do what you say.

Next time your puppy digs a hole. Before you go to fill it, sprinkle in Cayanne Pepper into it. That way the next time your puppy goes back to dig it up, he will get a buring sensation in his eyes. This will eventually teach him that digging causes buring. But you might have to be persistent with it, until it stops. The peppper will not cause any physical damage. I hope it works!

Ahhhhh - you have a rovertiller! Options are to rent him out to neighbors to dig their gardens or if you want to stop the digging, you need to supervise him while he's in the backyard. Dogs seem to most often dig for entertainment or hunting. Either way, you need to redirect him when he begins this exercise. Some people will create areas where their dog can dig and then teach there where they can dig and where they cannot.

Well here is somethin you can try, put chicken wire over the spots where he has been digging and cover the spots with dirt you do have to attach the wire to the ground so it will not move and hurt the dogs. Then you should make a spot where they can dig like a sand box and if they try to dig in the area that you do not approve of you should remove them from that spot and bring them to the sand box where it is ok for them to dig. hope this works for you!
