I work at Petsmart, I just got 3 new parakeets. They are all males. They are all very sweet and I have been working with them in the store for quite some time. I brought them home and cant get them to eat their fresh fruits and veggies. I know they like them because they ate them at the store. Mabey they are just getting used to the change, but I am getting a little concerned. Everyone keeps telling me to just keep them coming and eventually they will eat them. Has anyone ever had this problem. I have also spent about $100 on toys they arent playing with. I tried to get the same toys they were used to and some different. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi, nice to meet you and your new Parakeets!
My first thoughts are that your concerns revolve around their (un)familiarity, or lack of it, in their new surroundings, competitive bird-bird bonding versus bird-person bonding, or lack of it, and the fact that they are more concerned with learning from each other's behaviour rather than following the paths that you need them to pursue! So, I suggest you keep them apart, preferably in separate cages, that you treat them as INDIVIDUALS rather than as a group-of-three, and devise your own TLC arrangements with each one of these guys SEPARATELY! You are presently seeing "group behaviour" at this time, rather than setting up an environment where each of them can BOND WITH YOU singly! I could say more... but these suggested guidelines should suffice for now. Good Luck!

It can take a week or so to settle in and eat normally. As for the toys, with 3 of them together they will probably play with eachother more than toys. If you want to tame them I suggest they each have their own cage and one on one time or they will only bond with eachother.

I think they may just be a little disoriented, there were with allot of other birds, allot going on around them all the time, make sure they keep eating their reg. food & drinking water and maybe try a different fruit or veggie, it youv tried it all just keep giving it in smaller bits, they may try harder to eat if they think another will get it all, the toys will get used eventually, I think we all go nuts with the toys when we get a new pet, hope all goes well with them and try to enjoy and not worry too much.

Sounds like they are stressed or don't like thier cage/surrounding. Try taking one out and give it it's own cage. See if that helps. Also, if birds are cold or if they feel a draft they won't act normal. If they are too hot this can affect them also. Make sure the AC, wind or heat isn't blowing on them. This will blow little dust particles on them that can cause a problem for such a little bird. Also, a quiet bird can be a sick bird, watch that. Check for safe surroundings from a birds point of view. Are there other birds in the area that may be bullying them? Is the activity to much for them? Are there to many people/pets coming and going to make them feel safe? Birds have their own personalities and have thier own needs. Also, feed them what the store fed them and slowly move to new foods. Check them for parasites and mites and check that thier beaks and nails are trimmed down. Best of luck!
