I put one of my dogs down last week, and I'm worried about my other one. Our Rottie Cassidy grew up with our dog we had to put down, and I was wondering if there is any advice for us to help him through this. He seems okay right now, but he's 10, and I want to make sure we are helping him "deal" with the death in our family.

I am so sorry for your loss. We have gone through this just last March. Peanut was depressed for several days, but eventually got better. We just gave her lots of attention and play time, then adopted another dog so she became 'big sister' instead of 'little sister' and is doing great. It just takes time.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Dogs will be affected by your emotions too, so stay strong. In time, I rescued another dog, and it was the best decision that I could make for Fred. He was back to his old self and made a new friend.

When you're ready, another companion for your dog will help. You might even consider a rescue that focuses on adopting mature dogs.

It would be a "win win" situation for both pooches.

Spend as much time with him as you can. I think that is the most important thing is to just not let any of your grief show to the other dog, because that will make them feel worse about it.

This is so hard for them especially if they never got to see their friend after they passed. I went through this two years ago when our terrier missed her friend so much that she was lethargic and lost her spark--they were friends for over 10 years. In my own grief I didn't realize how sad she was until a few days had passed. We did adopt another dog although I was not ready, Emma really needed a friend--and it was a great decision for us. Its not good to just go out and adopt any dog but perhaps a friend to have a play date with?

I would also keep a close eye on him as he is at the age where he is more prone to medical problems and a check up at the veterinarian's office might be a good idea.

I have learned that they grieve just like we do and need the time to get over the lost. I lost Yowler in June and every once in awhile one of my otehr dogs are out in the yard looking for him. They do heal in time but I dont think they ever forget their pals. Having another pet does help them I think.
