Frontline or K9 Advantix?

I've been using Frontline Plus on my dog, but I'm not impressed. It claims to kill ticks yet I still pick a bunch off of him everytime we hike. And it does nothing for the gnats and mosquitos that bug him.

I've researched K9 Advantix, and there is a lot of horror stories about pets becoming ill or permanently damaged from the Permethrin in it.

I'd like some advice on what other dog owners use to keep the bugs, ticks, and mosquitos off their dog. Flea collars, natural insect repellents, etc. Thanks

Hello! Yes, please stay away from any of the Hartz products! In addition to using Interceptor Flavor Tabs (Heartworm), we also use Adams Spot On Flea and Tick control--it does a wonderful job as we back up to a very large wooded area. When we adopted our Dobe, she had heartworm and we don't take any chances of her getting bitten by anything. One thing I would like to point out: the flea collars keep the fleas on the head and neck from getting to the rest of the body and the fleas from the body from getting to the head and neck, nothing more. I wish they would take them off the market completely as they are not effective and some cats and dogs can have an allergic reaction to them (I used to work for a vet, so I know from the experts). Good luck!

Our vet has recently suggested Promeris since we live in a rural area.

If you want to use a natural product I highly reccommend Natural Chemistry products. They have a shampoo and spray that you can use on any age dog or cat, as often as needed and can also be use with flea drops and other flea pproducts without interactions. It really works and is safe for your pets, children and enviroment.

I've been using K9 Advantix for years and it workds really well for fleas and ticks. But I have a nagging worry about using it since one of my dogs slept on my arm after I used it on her. The next morning my arm, where she laid, was numb and stayed that way for hours. I also have a little Border Collie that runs away from me when I try to put it on him. Now I wonder is it actually causing them discomfort or physical damage. But I know fleas are also bad for them. So what do I do?

I used K9 Advantix and it irritated my dogs skin, so we switched to Frontline and it is not as effective as the K9 Advantix. It probably wouldn't hurt to try the Advantix once and see how it works for your pet. Do not use any over the counter products. Especially Hartz. We used it on our cats one time and they both ended up with health problems. Talk to your vet for other options : ) What a cute pup !

I've used K9 for years.

here's what my vet told me the difference was:

Frontline: bug actually have to BITE your dog for the stuff to work, or kill the bugs, so your dog is still getting bit.

K9: There's a repellent in it, so it repels the bugs from even biting your dog.

I've only heard horror stories about Hartz, and dealt with my previous boxer getting burnt from it, it was awful.

Good luck!
