For kittens under the age of 8 weeks use Dawn dishwashing soap & warm water. Leave the soap on for a few minutes & then rinse thoroughly. Don't get it in their eyes or ears. Be sure to dry them completely & keep them warm afterwards. Small kittens loose body heat very quickly. You can bathe mom the same way. Do not use any chemical substance on kittens unless you have first checked with your vet. Check with the vet on what to use for a nursing mother too. Many things can be passed through the milk or licked off of the fur & harm the kitten so its best not to give her anything until you check. Dawn is very effective. We use it for this purpose in rescue all the time.

Do not buy a flea shampoo from the pet store for little kittens! If they are really young (as in way under 8 weeks) give them a bath with dawn dish detergent, and let it stay on their fur for 10 minutes. Make sure to put cotton balls in their ears so the fleas don't hide there. Consult with your veterinarian for the best way to treat the mother depending on the stage at which she is nursing the kittens. You will have to launder all the bedding the cats have come into contact with at first, and an area treatment of your house may be necessary.

Go with Capstar. My cat had fleas and it worked like a charm. It is also very cheap. Also ask your vet about regular flea treatments for your cats to prevent it from happening again. You may also need to flea treat your home with a spray, powder, or bomb depending on the severity of the flea problem.

Get Revolution from your veterinarian. It's much better than over the counter flea preventatives, especially since it will eradicate not only fleas but also internal parasites and ear mites. You can also ask your vet if they have a product called Capstar, it's a pill given to the cat and it will kill the fleas immediately.
