Dry skin?

My dog scratches a lot. We know its not fleas. So we think it may be dry skin. Does anybody know of something that can help with that? Keep in mind that I don't live around any good pet stores where we can buy dog shampoo or anything. But maybe is there something we would find around the house or at Walart or something?

You should be sure it is dry skin rather than allergy. One of our dogs had allergies and scratched a lot as a result. He was allergic to grass, but there are also food allergies. We avoid food products with wheat and stick to lamb and rice, or chicken and rice formulas. Also, be sure you don't bathe the dog too often as it can dry out skin.

Dry, flaky, itchy skin is often the result of a food allergy. Try avoiding any foods with corn, wheat, soy, gluten, vegetable protein, or byproducts in the ingredients.

I live almost a 100 miles from the nearest pet supply stores. So why my dogs get dry skin, I just add a teaspoon of Olive Oil to their food.

Make sure not to use people shampoo! That definitely dries out their skin. And I've heard a rumor about washing dogs with some oatmeal mixture to moisturize their skin, but I've never tried it.

My vet recommended DermCaps. I've purchased them from Valley Vet Supply online in the past....pretty reasonable and they worked very well for my golden with itchy skin. A good quality shampoo I used was Hylyt - good for sensitive and itchy skin.
