Someone told me that you need to take classes to be a dog/cat groomer. Is this true or false?

I was taught to groom by a groomer at her shop. I paid her to teach me and I worked on the dogs in the shop. I put in 1500 hourd before I was done.
I would not have done it without training.

Depends, every state is different. I'm retired now but I taught myself. The hard part is finding dogs to practice on. I had a book with all the breeds and the different cuts and styles. There was not a school where I lived, but I think the best is what everyone says, find a groomer to teach you or a school. The hardest part for some is learning to handle the difficult dogs.

Yes you need training. Some groomers will train you and let you be their intern

Petco and Petsmart send you thru a training course and then you are an apprentice for some time before you can be a groomer.

It does help to have the training, however some groomers will let you sit in and help and learn with them. Kinda like a trade/internship

It actually depends on which state you live in. Many do not require formal training. However, if you plan to be a groomer it is a good idea anyway. There are so many breeds of dogs and they each require haircuts that are different from the others. You will need to know exactly what a dog neeeds, especially since the customers will sometimes have no idea what kind of haircut their breed gets. Some techniques can be hard to master without training and practice from schools, especially when it comes to grooming poodles.

it is true. you have to go to a trade school or something. nothing as big as college but you do need to go to school just like a hair dresser does. if it is your own dog or cat, you can do what you like, but if you are grooming other peoples dogs or cats you need a groomers license.
