Also, make sure you don't buy any of the pre-made nectar that is red. The red dye can harm the birds, and they don't need it to be red to be attracted to it, anyway. I don't know why they can sell it with red dye in it when it is known to harm or even kill the birds. Good luck!

I had the same problem with ants until I found a feeder that has an ant "moat" built into the top of it. It works pretty well.

We have about three feeders right now and our humming birds go at it so often that we have to refill them all about every week. We love our humming birds, we had them actually land on us before. We make our own nectar because its cheaper and its the same stuff as the store bought stuff except with no food coloring :3. ants? I donno, never had that problem.

Yes, I used to feed the hummingbirds, but it is quite a bit of work! The nectar can get 'spoiled' quickly in the hot weather and be harmful to these delicate cretures--so change often--twice a week is probably right. And filling the container halfway makes sense to me too.

I was told once a week, but if you notice ants, sooner.....
