I don't subscribe to a local newspaper, but pick one up every now and then just to look to see what pets are either up for adoption, free, or breeders with new litters for sale. A couple times I've been mighty tempted and even call to see if they've had any results. It's actually how we found Fifi, my toy poodle, for free.
Does anyone else keep an eye on pets advertised in the Want Ads?

Yes, I do. I love all dogs, but have a special fondness for corgis. When I see one that is adverstised to be rehomed I usually call & give my name/# and let them know if they have trouble finding the pet a good home to please contact me. I have a lot of connections in the corgi world and sometimes can link a corgi that's a good fit into a waiting home. I don't respond to corgis for sale, though.

I look at the pet classifieds everyday. There are occasionally lost pets and recently I was able to find one for a gal who had lost her cat.

Never and I do not recommend it. Backyard breeders or breeders that cannot sell their litters advertise. Most good breeders have sold their pups before they hit the ground. Be aware!
