Does anyone have a particular shampoo to use for a dog with dry skin?

My poor chihuahua has been shedding like crazy all summer. I thought it was just a heavy shed, but we're starting to notice when we scratch his back outside in the yard in hopes of getting off some extra fur, we're also getting a lot of dry skin flakes coming off. He doesn't have a rash anywhere, just flaky skin.

He doesn't scratch or bite much, so I don't think it's bothering him.

We only bathe him when he's particularily dirty, which has only been a couple times this summer. We had been told overbathing can dry the skin further. What we do use when we have to is a sensative skin oatmeal formula shampoo.

I thought about using the Science Diet sensative skin food, but he's already on the sensative stomach formula, so I don't want to pull him off that.

Suggestions?

It sounds more like a Fungus so I would suggest Neutrogena T-gel and follow the instructions carefully. Tea tree oil is good for the itch and is anti-fungal but best bet is to use the variety with TeaTree oil AND Coal Tar.

Definitely want to use something with Oatmeal. You should test anything you put to your pet's skin in a small area to see if there is an allergic reaction. I put Vitamin E oil on my Cats and Dog's hot spots when they become dry and scaly.

Two Words: Plum Silky

You can find it at any independent pet store. It is gentle, toxin free, and smells soooooooo good. don't let the blueish purple color deture you, it does not stain.

Dinovite makes an INCREDIBLE shampoo that I am using on my Golden Retriever-it is mild-suds well-and rinses out so nice. I have seen a HUGE difference in my Golden's coat. I love this product. I do agree with getting some oil in the diet too.
