Cockatiels and mating

I have a male and female cockatiel. They get along wonderfully and are about 7 years old. I had tried to mate them a few years ago. They would lay eggs but they would not hatch. No babies ever inside either. I took out their nesting box and let them rest because I know it can be rough on them physically and emotionally. Recently my male has started to feed my female like she is a baby bird. He will actually regurgitate food into her mouth and I am curious if this is a sign that they are wanting to mate. Now, I have no reason to mate them but I feel like I am maybe holding them back from something they want to do. What does it mean when they take on this behavior? Is it normal for a male to feed his lady this way? Should I mate them for their sake? Thanks in advance....
