My coop is is 4'X8' with a run thats 7'X10'. I am housing 10 chickens just fine. On the run be sure to some of the wire under the ground to keep animals from digging in. You will only need one male. Lets say you wanted 10 chickens total.... what I would do if buy 15. If your buying them from a feed store most the time they are not sexed and as the grow you can just re home the males. Make sure you have nesting boxes, they should be up off the floor of the coop and one nesting box for every 4 hens. The roosting bars should be higher then the boxes.
This is just how I have done things and so far its working for me.

I will tell you a really good book to buy that has helped us with our chickens and will give you everything you need for your coop is storeys guide to raising chickens. we got ours at tractor supply store. you might find it cheap on the internet. There are many animals that are predators of chickens. dogs will kill them, cats, weasels, many animals are attracted to them. the book will tell you them also, its a great book full of info. there are so many things i could write down for you but the book will be much more helpful. try the book its great. we got black austrolorps ( i think thats how its spelled) and they are great layers with great personalities.
