Can you break your dog from eating poop?

When we first got her, she was fine, we kept the door open so the cat can get into the laundry room to use the litter box. But then one of her doggie frindss came over and snatched some cat poop. Since then, we had to put a cat door to stop her from getting into the litter box and now it has progressed to all kinds of poop - dog and deer... She knows "leave it", but sometimes we don't see it until she snatches one. Is there anything else we can do?

The only thing I've done to stop my dog from doing this is to put a baby gate in front of the door where I keep the litter boxes. It's really gross isn't it?

When we first adopted Anna she did this. I ended up picking up her poop as soon as she did it so she would not eat it. Thankfully she eventually out grew this habit. I know there are some products you can buy that you add to the food that makes it taste bad, but that won't help you with the deer poop. I think Sara's advice is probably good.

I have a similar problem when it comes to my dog eating other dog's poop. I have done a bit of research and I have found that the reasoning behind this is due to the dog being fearful of when the next time he/she will be fed. If the dog has ever gone without food, or has to compete for food, then this behavior will come about. How to fix it, is to make sure to eliminate any waste that is left behind, don't have your dog "feel" like he is going to starve. Make sure there is no competition for food and that they eat on a regular schedule. I have to feed the Baxter away from everyone else and be present to make sure that he gets loads of praise for taking it slow.

when we adopted out last dog from safe haven she would eat our other dogs poop outside if we didn't watch. She is over a year old now and seems to have quit that bad habit. Not sure if she outgrew it or if being abandoned and coming from a shelter she was afraid she would not get food? However both dogs will eat rabbit poop if they find it in the yard?
