can a dog survive being strangled by his cable

my dog got strangled by his cable. By the time we freed him, his eyes were popping out of his sockets and they kept bouncing up and down. He was thrashing and kept banging his head against the ground it looked like he was having a seizure. he also seemed as if he couldn't stand up, his legs could not hold his weight. We could not afford to take him to the vet. We thought he was dying, but after an hour, he got up and half dragged half walked to the front of the yard. he collapsed again and just stayed there. he looked normal,he drank some water and he had his head up and he would wag his tail wehn we got near him. He still could not get fully upright and still refused to eat. Still, we thought he was getting better. During the night, he started barking, we went to check on him, even though he barked at a cat, he was laying flat and could not walk or lift his head, he just rolled himself. He started baning his head again, as if he could not hold it up anymore. By morning he looked worse, we kept an eye on him all night, and all he did was roll around and hit his head. It was so sad and frustrating to see him suffer like that. We had no choice but to call the animal control office and have him picked up to he could be put to sleep. That way he wouldn't suffer. The question that has been eating on me is, even though he was obviously seriously injured, would he have survived if had been able to take him the vet?

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

So much depends on how long the animal was without oxygen but I seriously doubt your vet would have been able to help the dog - but he would have been put to sleep earlier.

We had something simular happen to a pig once - it was a freak accident that he got his head stuck in a gate. We had to cut the gate to get him out so it was several minutes that the pig was in distress. We really thought he would die - there's not really much you can do to help a pig. But he lived quite a few months but he acted very simular to someone who had a stroke. Since he did not appear to be in any pain the vet said to just let nature take it's course.

While I'm sure your event was also a accident, should you get another pet you may want to consider a dog run instead of chain.

There is a humongous difference between leaving an animal to suffer overnight without even TRYING to get veterinary care versus leaving an animal overnight in a vet's care. Those two situations aren't even comparable.

I got a question to you guys that say lettig it live over night was suffering, because we had a dog that was at the vet that was hit by a car and they let it live through the night and she probaly was suffering too. Shouldn't they put her down too because you call letting animals live over night suffering. But you guys are saying its okay for them to have an animal live over night but they are still suffering too. So you guys probaly say she was denied midical help and let it suffer and say you would sell every thing to get it midical help. Well you guys should be saying yes or no if you would think the dog would of survived that was the question not saying bad stuff all the time. Plus you weren't in pepper0296 in this situation. So say what she wanted us to answer not say what you guys been saying. I surprize you guys are mean like this and you guys should be comforting her and answer the question she asked. Thats all I have to say. To pepper I'm sorry for your loss because I been in your sitiation and didn't take are animals to the vet because we can't afford it because we have to buy hay every week, grain, cat food, dry dog food, wet dog food, front line and thats all for the animals and not including for us only the animals. Sorry for these people not answering your question and I think you shoulds get another animal. Sorry for you loss and good bye.

beekay62: I've never once said that this particular household shouldn't have owned a pet, because I know all too well that sometimes you just don't have the money. In fact, I'm in a similar situation right now. But the difference between my situation and their situation is that I TRIED getting medical attention, the animal was at least seen by a vet, and if it comes down to it this animal WILL be put out of its misery instead of being forced to continue to suffer. They obviously knew the dog was not doing well and needed to go to a vet, at THE VERY LEAST they should have called a vet and asked their advice or opinion on what to do, but yet the chose to ignore the fact that this animal was in pain and suffering! I am not in their shoes with this -exact- situation, however I *have* been in their shoes before about the money issue. To me, I don't give an animal or human's life monetary value; if my child was dying and I had no money to save her life, I wouldn't care, I would take her to a doctor and worry about the bills later. Obviously more importance will be put on a human's life than an animals', that's just how life is, BUT bottom line, they didn't even try to get *free* help such as a simple phone call, they just let it suffer overnight without trying to get any type of help or advice whatsoever. THATS what bothers me the most about this situation. Because whether you had the money or didn't, something still could have been done
