I have a 14 year old cat who likes to sharpen her claws on my furniture (regardless of alternatives I buy for her). Am replacing couch and need suggestions on how to keep new chairs protected.

You could try clipping their nails yourself. Or have you heard of the product " Scccat"? you can find it on Amazon.com. Put it near where you don't want them near and if they walk by this product there is a sensor that shoots a burst of air out that startles the cats!

I am not a fan of declawing because if they ever get lost it takes away one of their natural defense mechanisms.. So I suggest putting a scratching post with catnip in front of the couch/chair wherever she is normally scratching so it kind of blocks it. When she gets the hang of scratching the post you can slowly move it away to a spot that's more convenient and hopefully she'll stick with it. Also like with dogs learning a new trick, you could use treats and lots of positive reinforcement when you see her scratching on the post instead of the furniture. Good luck!

Make sure you have plenty of scratching posts for your cat to use! It helps if you put some catnip on them to draw their attention to them! Also spray the furniture with a pet repellent usually you can find them in the pet departments at stores! It also helps if you keep your cats nails trimmed regularly! If all else fails your only other option would be to get them declawed if it gets out of hand and the other solutions don't work!

You could try a scat mat but I prefer bitter apple spray for cats. Spray 1 shot only in their mouth, then near the areas you'd like them to stay away from. Give them a scratch post and spray it with cat nip spray.

We have had great success with the StayAway. It is motion activated and shoots a quick blast of air if they get where they should not be. While our cats never scratched up things, one of them did urinate in the wrong place. It only took leaving this up for about a week and she never got on that chair again! A number of places sell this device but here is a link to the manufactures website: www.contech-inc.com

well, I suggest a spray bottle of water kept close at hand and whenever your cat starts to shred your furniture spray her throughly with the water. It worked for me!
