I am concerned that the E.P.A. has suddenly issued a warning about flea and tick treatments for dogs. I had used Frontline for years, but last year switched to Vectra 3D because my vets had gotten reports that Frontline was periodically failing some clients. They switched their pets and I switched mine, following their lead. But new treatments can have unforeseen side effects down the road and now that there is a major E.P.A. investigation, I am feeling nervous about using Vectra 3D on my pets. I checked the E.P.A. website and it had expanded its investigation to include Frontline as well. I also adopted a 12 year old dog who had never been treated and feel nervous about exposing him to chemicals suddenly so late in life. I need to know if there are any natural tick/flea repellents that are PROVEN effective, not just anecdotally helpful here and there. I need something RELIABLE. Does anyone have any suggestions for RELIABLE NATURAL REPELLENTS? AND can you tell me how long they are reliable and how often the dogs must be treated? Thank you.

I found this website because you got me thinking about what more I can do without "overdoing" the chemicals. I do put flea powder on my carpet for one hour before I vacuum once a week. I thought this website had some good ideas.

When I lived in Beverly Hills, CA which is a high flea infested area, before frontline, Revolution, etc. I used to take the dogs (two labs) into the vet once a month for a flea dip and it worked for a month. If you live in an area that also has lots of mosquitos then Revolution is the best one to use I have been told by a vet. We would "bomb" the house, Orkin would spray the yard, we would "bomb" the car, all while the dogs were at the vet having their dip. Make sure that the plants and any living thing, the pet food, etc. is all out of the area when you set off the flea "bomb" in the room. Also all bedding should be washed once a month.

I agree. I am uneasy about flea treatments. My cocker spaniel passed away from cancer ,and I had always used the vet supplied Frontline. So I am too looking for a safer natural flea treatment.

I have been giving my dogs Sentinel for the past 3 years. It not only controls heartworms, but also controls fleas and mosquitos. It is more expensive than Interceptor, but it is only one pill once a month. I use tick collars to control the ticks. It works for my dogs, and I have 4.
