I have a 6 month old Pointer/Heeler X puppy. She is well on her way to being a great dog, housebroken and obeys well. She is still not the best at totally sleeping though the night. My husband and I are huge campers and we really want to be able to take her with us on our tent camping trips. Does anyone have any ideas for taking a puppy in a tent or being in campgrounds with a dog? Any advice would be appreciated.

I believe in crating when camping. Start by having the crate at home and leaving it open so your dog can become used to it. I put a pad in it or a towel, favourite blanket etc in bottom on it for comfort. They learn crate means down time. Its safety for the dog as well. No tearing thru the tent. You can either put crate in tent of slightly leave tent door open enough to view her. ALso a favourite toy is a good thing. They adjust quickly. Praise the dog alot when she goes into it. It soon becomes a fun place. Crate can be a great thing for training and safety. Our dog doesn't mind hers at all. Dont ever use it as punshiment please. It will take some training at home and lots of love and patience but you will be glad you have done it. We even use it with our cats. Better to be safe then sorry for sure. Hope this helps you. Happy Camping. Pets and Camping are wonderful!

I took my dogs camping, and I just tied them out on a chain that screwed into the ground and they slept by the fire. But barking was somewhat of a problem, but if its a puppy, I would just bring them into the tent to sleep with you. You could maybe put the puppy into the car at night to sleep.

We have camped with our cocker spaniel since she was a pup, she is almost 12, and not at all healthy, but still loves to go camping. I would suggest using a kennel at night. Puppies like to chew and could chew through the tent. Also, if you leave her along in the tent, leave a radio for her. This will help drown out unfamiler noices. Keep her on a leash at all times because you don't know about other dogs. Also, don't let her out alone at night, if you are camping in a wooded area, wild animals could be near, like raccoons or worse yet bears. Have fun, she will love it. Hope this was helpjul

I have a black lab. He a dog now a pretty obedient but he loves to bark at other dog and chase anything moving. Make sure to bring a tie-out and hook it around a tree. Make sure its back away from the main road; and nothing is in its way in-case your puppy see another dog it wants to play with. As for the sleeping probleme; tire him out during the day and have him sleep close to you at night. Do your best to block out outer nosie and bring a bed that he sleeps on at home. hope this helps!

If you can take along whatever she usually sleeps on or in, that would let her know that your sleeping there. Otherwise she may think it's time to go home when night comes and you won't get much sleep. That goes for whenever you sleep away from home. Also bring along a long rope or retractable leash so when she needs to go potty she'll have space to move around. Have a great time!
