I am thinking about putting Simone into a beginning agility class. She is three years old . .is she too young to start? She is a sheltie mix so I think she would be good at that . . aren't they known for being good agility? Anyone know of a good agility class in the St. Louis area.

As long as she is healthy, I think it would be fine. If she has any health problems, though, I would mention it to your vet and he/she can tell you if your dog is up to it.

my eight year old hyperactive border collie after her run.

A dog is never too young or too old for a sport as long as they are healthy. I have an eight year old border collie who I am going to train in agility and allready takes a thirty minute chase after the quad at high speeds every day. She even has problems with her back legs and still loves to go run. Shealties are a working breed, so agility is perfect to burn some of that boundless energy. It may take her longer because she is past the learning stage, but just be patient and make it an enjoyable experience for her (make it a sort of game and praise lots) and eventually it will pay off.

How old does my dog need to be to start agility?

"Dogs can start agility at any age but the class must be tailored to the age of the dog. Young puppies can learn many important skills for agility without being introduced to any of the obstacles. Your dog needs to be physically developed to jump & weave and mentally developed to understand the obedience skills already discussed – this age will be different for every dog. Older dogs need to be physically healthy. Yes, an old dog can learn new tricks."

I say start them as young as possible. Its just like teaching a child how to read. If you start from birth they will understand it better when they are older. I dont think dogs are ever to young to start classes and I also dont think they are ever to old. You should definatly ask the teacher what his/her opinion is. They would have a better answer.

I am not from the St Louis area but no 3 actually might be too old to get best results, but again that is for the best results. The sooner you get them into any training the better. I start any type of training at roughly 1 to 1 and a half. As I found outy with harvye it is a stop and go process now. ^~^;
