I want to adopt a dog but live in a very small apartment. What kind of dog would be ideal for city dwellers?

Please do not get a large dog. Large dogs need more room to roam and a small apartment is just not fair to the dog....let alone fair to your neighbors, especially if you live on an upper floor. Think of a smaller breed such as a Yorkie, Shih tzu or Maltese.... but more importantly.... adopt your pet from a shelter and homeless rather than buy from the pet store or puppy mill!!!

If you are a very active person you can still adopt a larger breed. My rotties did very well when we lived in an apartment. Because we took them out with us to do everything. Depending on your activity level really plays a part on what type dog you get. Boxers have alot of energy where as my Rat Terrier is VERY laid back. Others have suggested an adult dog from a shelter. This is an excellent idea as most of these animals are as big as they will get and you can get a better idea of their energy levels. A cockapoo is a great small to medium siz breed. They are smart and usually adjust well to any type of home life. They can laze with you or hike the trails with you. They are just happy being with you. Another great breed is the lab. They are smart and fun. They use them in all kinds of settings to include therapy dogs and seeing eye dogs. So they fit into all kinds of different lifestyles. Pugs also seem to fit into all lifestyles. A maltese is a great apartment dog! They are small and easy going. However, they require alot of grooming. If you will be adopting from a shelter ask for help from the people that work there. They should know the breeds and be able to match a dog that matches your personality. You can also check online atwww.dogbreedinfo.com Click on "find the perfect dog" button. When this page comes up in very small writing is a Breed selecter quiz. Once you take this quiz it brings up a list of breeds that should fit your lifestyle and desires. Clicking on a breed in this list will show a photo, description, and temperment of each type of breeds. I hope this helps you choose the correct animal to add to your family and congrats on your new addition early!!

I suggest adopting an adult dog from a shelter. The breed may not be as important as the individual dog's temperament. An adult may already be house-trained, and you will know the dog's full size, his energy level and his noise level. I love puppies, but adopting an adult dog was a rewarding choice for us.

for a dog that will live in a city, you should most likely look for a small-breed, calm dog. sometimes, the older they are, the calmer they will be. if for some reason you can't get a dog however, check into voulnteering at a local shelter. it's lots of fun!!

You should probably look for a small breed dog that is housetrained and one that doesn't bark alot. A chihuahua, poodle, pomerainian, pug, puggle, shih tzu, and lhasa apso would be dogs that I would research. Make sure you think about the age and energy level of the dog you are looking for. This could affect how well the work out in a small apartment. Spen time with any animal that you are think about adopting so that you are sure they are the right one for you.
