Do ACL ligiment tears or ruptures happen gradually over time or instantly. Are there any ways to prevent them from happening?

I don't believe that it happens over time, but I suppose anything is possible. I think it usually happens during an activity. I don't think there is any way to avoid it.

Don't know if it can be prevented but when my Weim tore his ACL it happened in an instant...both times. He was running and slipped rounding a corner and that's all it took.
