My two cats Teddy and Shorty have been doing this forever it doesn't harm them so I am not concered about their health but it is a very strange behavior so outta my own curiosity I thought I would ask. Teddy and Shorty will eat the litter out of the litter box every time they go in it right before they go more often than not they only do it when I have either just scooped or cleaned the litter box. It is only the litter that they are eating and not the poop or pee just the clean litter. So my qeustion is this does anyone know why they are doing this?

for some reason, it tastes good to them. this is a problem though b/c even if they've been eating it for years, it can still cause a block in their intestines that will have to be surgically removed, very, very pricey. the clumping litter is particularly dangerous. i would change their litter to something a little less appetizing, but do so gradually so they don't reject the box.

I would wager that they are missing something in their diet. Most cat litters are made of a calcium carbonate derivative. Check the list of ingredients on the bag. Perhaps you could give your cats some canned fish. I believe it is salmon that has bones in it. They are edible and very hign in calcium. Check around for kitty supplements that has the same ingredients as the litter.

Good luck!
