Q: Why is my dog not eating?
Should I worry when my dog doesn’t eat much for a couple days in a row?
If your dog doesn't eat for two days — not to worry. But longer times without your dog’s usual appetite should be checked with your veterinarian.
The smell of food is the most attractive thing for a dog, whose sniffer is a thousand times more sensitive than yours (dogs can “remember” four thousand different smells). Taste, texture and temperature of food are important, too — although color is not, so dogs don’t care if Krispy Kibble is meat-colored. But smell tops the list. When your dog has a minor canine cold (and stuffy nose) he can’t smell the food as well, and might not try to taste it either.
Try mixing warm water with kibble to bring out the irresistible aroma of … well, warm, wet dog food.
If appetite doesn’t come back in a couple days, see your veterinarian.
