Why is my chihuahua loosing hair on his back legs and rear?

My chihuahua is losing his hair on his rear legs and rear only. Can you tell me why and how to stop it and get his hair to grow back? It just started and nothing has changed. Food or enviroment or anything.

I agree with Cathy, above...the interesting thing about food allergies is that your dog doesn't have them...until she has them. Basically, the dog is exposed to the allergen - say wheat - every day for a certain amount of time. Then one day he hits his "wheat threshold"; and now he is allergic to it. From there, every time he is exposed to wheat, the allergy will become more serious/severe. It typically manifests first as licking of the paws. Later hotspots appear and hair loss can occur. Definitely check things out with your vet, but a good option is to switch foods and give it 2 weeks to see if it helps. (Transition your dog off the current food for the first week; 75% old food for a few days, then 50%, etc.) A high quality holistic food like Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Solid Gold, Eagle Pack, Innova, or Nature's Variety is your best bet. These all leave out corn, wheat, and soy. Also by-products, which can ultimately cause stomach upset (rather than skin manifestations.) If the spot doesn't get worse then you know that it was probably an allergy. The good news is, once you remove the allergen (and watch out for them in treats, too!) the problem will begin to right itself. Hair grows back, itching stops, etc. Good luck!!

It could be he has food allergies. Alot of dogs are allergic to wheat. Look at the ingredients and see if wheat is close to the first ingredient. If so, you should probally change his food and see if that helps. Mine had that problem and I put him on Blue buffalo ( fish) and it cleared him right up. Yours being so tiny - you could put him on BB small bites. I really trust this brand of food. Good luck!
