Q: Why don't my cats like their food anymore?

They have been eating this brand for at least 6 months and have always liked it just fine, but now it seems like they are always begging for more food, even though the dish is full. Is it possible we just got a bad batch or something? Or are they asking for something else?

I find that just like people they like a little variety. After 8 months or so try something different or add a little treat to their food.

Check the expiration date on the bag. Once in a while the pet store will accidently sell a bag of expired pet food.

But cats will get bored now and then. When My cats give me the "But THAT'S NOT WHAT I ORDERED!!" look I sometimes add some dried tuna flakes, usually found in the treats area.

I would take the food back to the store and switch it for another bag, make sure the lot numbers are different. Any company worth their weight will take it back. Don't force your cats to eat it there may be something wrong with it. Get them other food right away.

Since I can't add anything to my answer below, I have to add another "answer"--which is really a response to some of the other "answers" asserting that your cats may be bored with the food and not that the food is "tainted". My response to this is that you are talking about MULTIPLE cats stopping eating the same food at the same time--I think this is more likely to occur at the same time when the food is tainted; your cats are not as likely to simultaneously "tire" of the same food!

I think sometimes my cats just get bored with their food and vary the type of canned food I give them (in addition to their staple dry food). My vet says they don't really care that much about variety, but I find that hard to believe. I know for sure that whenever I open a can of tuna fish flavor, they all come running. Of course, my cats are all absolutely spoiled rotten, but that's what they're for!

They base the "finicky cat" sales pitch on fact. Cats can be very fussy spoiled little things. Examine the food but don't make yourself crazy worrying about poison food. Check the date on the food to make sure that it is current. Make sure that it hasn't dried out or gotten little bugs in it (you would see the tiny holes and eggs). I have had cats that would vacuum down one type of food. I would stock up on it and then they would refuse to eat it. I have other cats who will eat ANYTHING. Some cats don't eat very much and others never want to stop. I have one cat who won't eat in the morning until she has been kissed. I know this sounds a little mean but put the food out and just let them decide when they are hungry enough to eat

It could be that the company that makes the pet food has changed the ingredients. Or it might be that there is a toxin in the food (gee, that NEVER happens!) and maybe your cats are too smart to poison themselves.

My cats used to do that. I discovered that exposing the dry food to air for several hours makes it lose the aroma attractive to cats. I now put out smaller amounts of dry food more often, and I make sure the lid is snug on the food bin.

It could be either one. Our cats like a variety of brands. When they ask their Daddy for a different food, they get it. When they ask me for something different, I tell them when they have eaten what is on the dish, I will give them something else and they usually eat it. And sometimes they just want one of us to sit on the floor and watch them eat because they don't like to eat alone.

I think it could just be that they are bored with it. My cat ate the same brand of food for 6 years and one day said ENOUGH. I had to experiment with some others before I found one that he would eat instead and he has been eating that one instead. I give him wet food occassionally and healthy treats, so I think he gets enough variety to be OK with his diet.
