Q: Why doesn't my food like to eat?

October 7, 2009 | By Ccole44 | 5 answers | Expired: 1888 days ago

Its funny...my dog Orion, 10 months, really doesn't like to eat. I really think he just doesn't like to chew. I am feeding him Nutro Max puppy food. Just like the many other foods I have tried to get him to eat, he likes it at first but then loses interest. I've never seen a dog that didn't like to eat. I have started putting water in his food to encourage eating, which he seems to like, but I don't want him to start to become picky.

Sometimes they can just be picky eaters. I would start with a check up at the vet to make sure everything is ok(he may have some baby teeth/loose teeth). If there is no problem, I wouldnt be too concerned. Dogs can go several days without eating. Also, keep in mind treats during the day can also fill them up enough that they don't feel like eating dinner/breakfast.Just remember they WILL NOT starve themselves!! He will eat when he's hungary. I would beware with enticing him with people food/canned food because then he won't eat kibble at all. He will figure out if he doesn't eat his kibble mom will give him good stuff. Then you will really have a problem. You want to keep him on puppy food til he's a year old so he can grow properly. Wet food is mostly water so I wouldn't waste your money. You can try soaking the kibble in warm water (to enhance the smell) this may help and he is still getting the nutritional value from the puppy food. Also, make sure he isn't competing for food and you feed him in a quiet place. My aussie used to only eat late at night when the house was quiet and it was cooler outside. He didn't like to eat when it was hot or around the other animals. You will figure out his quirks as they all have them but as long as he has a good bill of health from your vet, he will be just fine. Good luck!

Try mixing his kibble with some warm water and letting it sit for a few minutes to make the food softer. After 6 months puppy food can also cause some irritation in dogs' digestive systems, so you may want to start mixing in some adult food. Read the ingredients on the package and make sure there's no corn, since that's a common food allergy in dogs!
You can also make him "people food" that might entice his tastes. Try brown rice, ground beef, chicken, turkey, wheat bread (all natural, of course), beans, carrots, and peas! My picky eaters love a warm bowl of meat and veggies. They cannot resist!

my dog is the same way and always has been. she's never been motivated by food or even very interested in it besides curbing her hunger and the occasional snack. this can be a blessing and a burden. try mixing your pups food w/some wet food. wet food is usually healthier and it has a richer taste and smell that dogs *usually* can't resist.

Sounds like a picky eater to me ( I was there with my dog who is 2yrs now). Not sure where you are located but there is a brand Evangers. They cater to picky eaters but are also very healthy too lol. They use fresh meat in their foods instead of frozen. Heres their web site. www.evangersdogfood.com/

Good Luck!

Has he been to the vet to make sure all is okay with him? Does his teeth look healthy none loose?
could be just picky. Have you tried mixing it with wet food?
Something you may want to talk to his vet about. good luck!
