Hi there, I work at Watermelon Mountain Ranch, New Mexico's largest no-kill animal shelter and rescue organization and I put your question to our canine behaviorists. My dog (a Shar Pei Lab cross) did the same thing. They said that it's possible that there may be a vitamin deficiency but it may just be a generally deficient diet--this isn't your fault.
According to our canine behaviorists, the reason dogs eat cat poop is because there is a higher protein content in cat poop than a lot of commercial grade dog foods. A way to get your dog to stop is to buy the best food you can afford--this isn't necessarily the most expensive food it's just higher quality. For instance: the key ingredient in most commercial grade foods is animal byproduct meal. This is a marketing term, which means the content of animal intestines and colons ground up, flavored and baked. Yuck! :( Look for high-grade foods that do not contain corn or wheat, as most dogs are allergic to the grains and make sure the food has a high quality protein content. Seems like a simple answer, but it's because it tastes good.

I think most dogs do this. It's gross but I keep the litter box inaccessable to the dog either with a gate or a pet door in to the washroom that the dog can't fit through.

The clumping cat litter is potentially lethal to your dog. The litter can clump in the dogs stomach and intestines. So make doubly sure that your pups cannot eat the kitty treats buried in the clumping litter.
