Q: Why does my neutered male cat hump things?

We recently adopted Odin, my 5 yr old male who is such a loving and affectionate kitty. I noticed the first night he came to bed with us that he would strattle our legs and knead with his front & back legs. Then I watched him do this on the blanket on the couch right next to me and right afterwards he licked himself and his penis was hanging out. He was neutered so why does he hump things?

How old was your cat when he was neutered? It is possible that he had a "sexual experience" prior to being neutered and still has some intact memory and instinct. One of the cats I adopted wasn't neutered until he ended up at the Humane Society at about one year of age. He occasionally tries humping another one of my male cats from the SIDE (who seem clueless as to why), but seems confused and cries out in bewilderment.

I know there is such a thing as "incomplete neutering", but I really don't know anything about it.

We have a neutered male who also likes to do that. When we got him the shelter thought he was about 1.5 years old -- but not old enough for his head to broaden out. The behavior didn't seem to start until some months after we got him, and I first noticed it when I was lying on the couch and was using a very soft squishy blanket. Since then, he has also gone to small stuffed animals. Even though he doesn't like it, it seemed when I tried to distract him or make sure he wasn't doing that (and I had to be diligent about it), then he stopped for a while (several months). However, a new phase has just recently started again. Like your kitty, ours is just a really loving, affectionate cat, great cat. As with some of the other answers, I also suspected it was because he was neutered after he had already matured in that way. However, I suppose it could also be that because he is male and even though neutered, some sensations may naturally trigger that response in their brains.
