Most of the literature I've read says that its a nesting instinct. Its what dogs would do in the wild when they would have to make a comfortable bed with leaves, grass & such. They don't have to do it now, but its all just instinctual. Some dogs have a stronger urge to do it than others. Teddy does it every time he lays down. Bailey is almost as bad but Cassidy hardly ever does it.

I've always thought that it was a very primal instinct and two of my four dogs do it also. My youngest girl, July has a lot of primal behaviors.
