Q: Why does my dog like to sleep under the covers?

Everynight when I go to bed, my 7 year old pit bull paws at the covers for me to let her under. She will sleep under the covers until I wake up in the morning. Does anyone know why this is?

Probably because you have encouraged that behavior? Maybe something psychological from the litter? Insecurity?

My dogs like to be covered up in the winter time. My kids think it's funny to have the dog crawl up beside them and snuggle under the covers with them. So for our dogs it's because they want to be warmer but I agree with the other people and think it's a security thing too. Our newest dog liked to sleep with her head under the couch or under our bed. We thought that was strange but we figured out it was dark for her that way.

I think it's the instinct to be in a den. Most dogs I know prefer to be under the covers or in tight spaces when they sleep. So that could be it!

I've got three dogs who all love to sleep under the covers. There has never seemed to be a rhyme or reason to it, and if they get hot in the middle of the night they crawl out and lay on top of the bedspread. They sure are warm and snuggly, but sometimes my legs can get in strange positions depending upon where they choose to lay! Oh, the things we do for our pets :)

there could be many reasons. wanting to be close to you, warmth, cave like security. etc etc. unfortuatly you will probably never know anymore then she wants to

I know my cat loves to be under the covers-so this in a cat-based explanation, hope it helps!
She could be curious, and be just exploring, then decide it's comfy and warm. It could be her comfort sleeping spot, who knows!
