Q: Why does my cat lick plastic bags?

October 24, 2008 | By Brenda T. | 12 answers | Expired: 2093 days ago

My cat has always been neurotic- but for the past few months she is driving me crazy by licking plastic grocery bags, she will also lick the plastic that holds my toilet tissue. This can't be good. She has plenty of food and water at all times. Trust me she is spoiled. HELP!

It seems to be more of a behavior characteristic of cats, as they also like to lick photos. It is said there may be some residual odor, or they like the feel of the plastic on their tongue. There is a website that gives answers to some questions about "why does my cat do this?" Although it says it cannot be copied, visit and see what other odd stuff your cat could be getting into! And, I guess your best choice would be to pick those bags up off the floor ASAP after grocery shopping to avoid being annoyed! That's my 2 cents! Jojo

Both of my cats like to lick the plastic bags, even if there wasn't anything edible in them. They love to play in them, and I have to make sure every single one is picked up or inevitably they will find it in the night when I'm trying to sleep and its crinkling sounds until I get up.

I don't know the answer, but 1 of my cats does something similar, he licks the plastic around the water and soda bottles, he never chews any of the plastic off, but I wonder if there is something in the plastic that is missing in his diet

I have no idea why, but our Beasley chews on plastic bags. We're always shooing her away from them but she tries to find a way to get at them.

Crazy thing.. another cat of ours, Squeaky licks pictures also! We have to make sure all photos are put up and away from the cats's reach! Silly cats! :)

Probably your cat likes the texture, but talk to other people their cats probably do the same behavoir

Wow I didn't realize so many cats do this. My Sage does it to. He more or less sniffs the bags and licks them a little. I have to keep telling him no. As soon as I get home from shopping, he is checking out the groceries while licking the bags.

Weird? Yes, but I not too concerned as he has never actually ripped any off of it.

All my cats have done that in the past i have no idea why they do it but it probally is danger to them i would just put them all in a place where your cat cant reach them.

My cat does the same thing and has swallowed some of the pieces she ripped off. So far she has been lucky and has just thrown up what she chewed but I am afraid that her luck will run out some day.  I lock up any plastic that she can chew. When I have bags I empty them as fast as possible.  You may never be able to stop the behavior but you can try and keep her safe by locking up anything she can get into

You know I have ad cats that do that too :)
One actually liked licked photographs too!
Weirdos. I would try to keep her away from the stuff though, can't be real healthy ingredients:) Try to stash plastics where she cannot get to it.

Personally, I think it is the texture they like but I am not sure. My cat Treasure does that and she will also rip pieces of and roam around the house as if she has caught a prize. It's pretty cute because I will find her treats in her food bowl.
